West Coast of Europe

A maior central solar? A maior central eólica? ALLgarve. | ∫ | Portuguese government hired a fashion (and fashionable) photographer, Nick Night (see photos) and launch a campaign to show the world we are the "West Coast of Europe". (Remember Jim Morrison: "the West is the best!") The campaign shows some of our sucessfull inmigrants in the entertainment business (Mourinho, Ronaldo, Mariza), and pictures like the above. If it were Sebastiao Salgado, we'd have also beautiful photos, with people inside, showing some of our greatness and miseries. He could well chose Saramago, or Fernando Nobre (Founder of International Medical Assistance). Maybe that won't be a good idea: much to the left, people who want to change the world through humanity. That doesn't attract investment. But these Mourinhos and Ronaldos, embeded in mist, what is the objective? Is it to show that the Portuguese are sophisticated? The NYT recalls one campaign conceived in a similar way by the German, last year, to brand itself as a "land of ideas," focusing on German technological and cultural innovation. What is Portugal, then? Could we be the ecologists of Europe? The biggest solar plant in the world? Portugal the fastest growing country in wind energy? Are we selling the Wind and the Sun? |
